 How come Mohammad was married to more than 4 women at the same time ?

Prophet Mohammad (p) married 12 women during is life. However, most of them were old and not attractive. He married them out of compassion to support them. Quran was revealed gradually over several years. When the verses of the Quran that prohibited men from being married to more than 4 women at the same time were revealed, Mohammad (pbuh) already had 9 wives who were still alive. He did not divorce any of them also out of compassion because the Quran prohibits the wives of Prophet Mohammad from marrying again.
