What is the significance of the moon for Muslims? Do they worship the moon? Why do some mosques have a crescent on their domes?

Muslims do not worship the moon at all, directly or indirectly. The only significance of the moon for Muslims is that Islam has establishes lunar calendar (called Hijri calendar, meaning Migration calendar) that starts with the date of Prophet Mohammad's migration to Medina. The months in this calendar follow the phases of the moon. There are 12 months in the Islamic Hijri calendar and each month lasts 29-30 days. Other than its relation to the Islamic calendar, the moon has no religious significance for Muslims. At some point in history, some Muslims saw a need to have a symbol, similar to Christianity's adoption of the cross as its symbol, so these Muslims choose the crescent as a symbol.
