How come Mohammad was married to more than 4 wives ? Prophet Mohammad married 12 women during is life. However, most of them were old and not attractive. He married them out of compassion to support them. Quran was revealed gradually over several years. When the verses of the Quran that prohibited marrying more than 4 wives were revealed, Mohammad (pbuh) already had 9 wives who were still alive. He did not divorce any of them also out of compassion because the Quran prohibits the wives of Prophet Mohammad from marrying again.
