Al-Mahdi (The Mahdi)
He is referred to in some Hadiths as Al-Mahdi, an Arabic word which means " The Guided ". The Mahdi is the title of this important Muslim leader, not his actual name. His actual name is going to be Mohammad and he is supposed to be a descendant of Prophet Mohammad
Abdullah bin Masood has reported that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said, "The World will not pass away before the Arabs are ruled by a man (referring to the Mahdi) of my Ahl Bayt (family) whose name will be like mine." (Abu Dawud & Tirmizi)
Abdullah. Ibn Masood reported that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said, "Even if there remains only a day before the World ends, the almighty Allah will greatly prolong that day to send a man from me (my progeny), from members of my House (family). His name will be similar to my name and his father's name similar to my father's name. He will fill the Earth with equity (fairness) and justice, as it (previously) was filled with oppression and injustice." (Abu Dawud)
Many individuals in the past falsely claimed to be the Mahdi. Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (the founder of Ahmadiya or Qadiani Movement) was one of those who falsely claimed to be the Mahdi.
Shia's Imam Mahdi vs. Sunni's Al-Mahdi The information we present on this page is Sunni Muslims' beliefs regarding the Mahdi which is based on what Prophet Mohammad صلى الله عليه وسلم said about the Mahdi. So, we will discussing the Sunni Muslims' Al-Mahdi who is not necessarily the same person as Shia's Imam Mahdi. As portrayed in Shia's books, Shia's Imam Mahdi's role he is expected to play and characteristics resemble that of the Dajjal (Anti-Christ), yet the expected signs preceding his appearance are are only slightly different from the signs preceding Sunni's Al-Mahdi. The Shia believe that Al-Mahdi is their 12th Imam. Shia claim that he is Mohammad bin Hasan Al-Askari and that disappeared at the age of 5 and went into hiding (or state of occultation) and has been hiding for 10 centuries. The Shia are awaiting for him to emerge from his state occultation in the End Times. By the way, there is no proof, even in Shia's books that his father, Hasan Al-Askari, had a son called Mohammad. According to Shia's books, the Shia's Imam Mahdi will be someone who prays to God in Hebrew and rules based on the Laws of David. He will rely on the Jewish Talmud. So, Shia's Mahdi will most likely be the Dajjal (Anti-Christ). The Shia claim that Imam Mahdi's father is Hasan Al-Askari. This contradicts with Prophet Mohammad's صلى الله عليه وسلم hadith that says the name of the Mahdi's father will be the same as the name of Prophet Mohammad's صلى الله عليه وسلم father, which means his father should be Abdullah. Shia's Imam Mahdi is not a normal human being since they are claiming that he has been alive for 1200 years. Sunnis reject this because there is no Hadith that says the Mahdi will not be a normal human being. In contrast, Shia's Imam Mahdi resembles the Dajjal (Anti-Christ) in many ways. Based on a hadith of Prophet Mohammad, the Anti-Christ was alive at the time of the Prophet and is still alive, but will not appear until God permits him to do so. Sunni Muslims' Al-Mahdi will be a good man. In contrast, Shia's Imam Mahdi, as portrayed in Shia's books, seems to be an evil man whom the Shia expect will persecute Sunni Muslims, resurrect and crucify Prophet Mohammad's Companions, Abu Bakr and Omar as well as Prophet Mohammad's
All this evidence leads us to believe that the evil originators of Shiism have purposefully portrayed, in their books, Imam Mahdi as someone very similar to the Anti-Christ in many ways in order to: (a) reject the real Mahdi when he appears because he is a Sunni Muslim and does not fit into their expectations, and (b) to deceive the Shia into following the Anti-Christ, thinking that he is the Mahdi. Shia's Imam Mahdi is a fictitious, imaginary character. He never existed as a child. He does not exist now, contrary to what they believe. Therefore, there will never be any person appearing in the future who will fulfil all the characteristics and signs of Shia's Imam Mahdi. The Mahdi will only identify himself as a Muslim, not a Sunni and not a Shia. We believe that most (if not all) of the Shia will find themselves compelled to accept the Mahdi because the signs that appear before him and those will announce him, such as a call and a hand from Heaven, will be so convincing and compelling that they will not be able to reject him. We hope that the coming Mahdi will bring the complete end of Shiism, by explaining to them that all of beliefs of Shiism are false. However, we fear that the Dajjal (Anti-Christ) when he appears later may be able to convince some of the Shia that he is the real Mahdi. For more information and details: (a) Shia's Imam Mahdi as the Anti-Christ Khilafa (Caliphate) The recommended governing method of the Muslim nation in Islam is called Khilafa (Caliphate) headed by a Khalifa (Caliph) who rules all lands controlled by Muslims. The Caliph is supposed to be chosen through a method called Bay'a (whereby Muslims offer allegiance to the Caliph) and the Caliph can be any good Muslim, regardless of which family clan or tribe he belongs to. The word Caliph means a successor, in other words, the one who comes after another ruler. After Prophet Mohammad صلى الله عليه وسلم four successive Caliphs reigned who enjoyed wide spread approval among Muslims when they were chosen. They followed the methodology of Prophet Mohammad صلى الله عليه وسلم in governing. They are: Abu Bakr Al-Siddique, Omar bin Al-Khattab, Uthman bin Affan, and Ali bin Abi Taleb. After Ali, there was a dispute over who should be chosen next. Some people favored Ali's son Al-Hasan (who is Prophet Mohammad's grandson) while others favored Muawiya bin Abi Sufyan, who was a powerful governor of AsSham. Al-Hasan reigned only 6 months and then resigned. Muawiya reigned for several years and chose his son Yazid to succeed him. Thus, the Umayya dynasty (Muawiya's tribe is called Bani Umayya) started. So, the Islamic Bay'a system was no longer followed. Under proper Caliphate system, any good Muslim can be chosen as Caliph. Instead under the dynasties that ruled the Muslims, the eligibility to become a ruler became restricted to the same ruling family or dynasty. Prophet Mohammad صلى الله عليه وسلم has accurately prophecied the governing methods that came to be followed after him and has prophecied that the proper Caliphate system will be applied again around the end of time. The Mahdi is expected to rule as a proper Caliph. Based on Huzaifah, Allah's Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم said, "Prophecy will remain among you as long as Allah wishes it to remain, then Allah Most High will remove it. Then there will be a caliphate according to the manner of prophecy as long as Allah wishes it to remain, then Allah Most High will remove it. Then there will be a distressful kingdom which will remain as long as Allah wishes it to remain, then Allah Most High will remove it. Then there will be a proud kingdom which will remain as long as Allah wishes it to remain, then Allah Most High will remove it. Then there will be a caliphate according to the manner followed during the prophethood (by the prophet)." Then he stopped. Habib said: "When Umar ibn AbdulAziz became caliph I wrote to him, mentioning this tradition to him and saying, "I hope you will be the Prince of the Faithful Believers after the distressful and the proud kingdoms." It pleased and charmed him, i.e. Umar ibn AbdulAziz." (Al-Tirmizi, Ahmad, Bayhaqi in Dala'il Nubuwwah) Based on Abu Saeed Al Khudri, the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said, "Allah never sends a prophet or gives the Caliphate to a Caliph but that he (the prophet or the Caliph) has two groups of advisors: A group advising him to do good and exhorts him to do it, and the other group advising him to do evil and exhorts him to do it. But the protected person (against such evil advisors) is the one protected by Allah." (Sahih Al-Bukhari) Based on Abu Saeed al-Khudri, Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: "When oath of allegiance has been taken for two caliphs, kill the one for whom the oath was taken later." (Sahih Muslim - Hadith 4568 ) Narrated by Abu Huraira: The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said, "The Israelis used to be ruled and guided by prophets: Whenever a prophet died, another would take over his place. There will be no prophet after me, but there will be Caliphs who will increase in number." The people asked, "O Allah's Apostle! What do you order us (to do)?" He said, "Obey the one who will be given the pledge of allegiance first. Fulfil their (i.e. the Caliphs) rights, for Allah will ask them about (any shortcoming) in ruling those Allah has put under their guardianship." (Sahih Al-Bukhari) Jarir said: " While I was at Yemen, I met two men from Yemen called Zhu Kala and Zhu Amr, and I started telling them about Allah's Messenger. Zhu Amr said to me, "If what you are saying about your friend (i.e. the Prophet) is true, then he has died three days ago." Then both of them accompanied me to Medina, and when we had covered some distance on the way to Medina, we saw some riders coming from Medina. We asked them and they said, "Allah's Messenger has died and Abu Bakr has been appointed as the Caliph and the people are in a good state.' Then they said, "Tell your friend (Abu Bakr) that we have come (to visit him), and if Allah will, we will come again." So they both returned to Yemen. When I told Abu Bakr their statement, he said to me, "I wish you had brought them (to me)." Afterwards I met Zhu Amr, and he said to me, "O Jarir! You have done a favor to me and I am going to tell you something, i.e. you, the nation of 'Arabs, will remain prosperous as long as you choose and appoint another chief whenever a former one is dead. But if authority is obtained by the power of the sword, then the rulers will become kings who will get angry, as kings get angry, and will be delighted as kings get delighted." (Sahih Al-Bukhari ) Narrated by Jabir bin Samura: I heard the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم saying, "There will be twelve Muslim rulers (who will rule all the Islamic world)." He then said a sentence which I did not hear. My father said, "All of them (those rulers) will be from Quraish." (Sahih Al-Bukhari ) Abu Dawud in his Sunan also reported this Hadith, but added to it "and the whole community will agree on each of them." Narrated by Ibn Umar: Allah's Apostle صلى الله عليه وسلم said, "This matter (caliphate) will remain with Quraish even if only two of them were still existing." (Sahih Al-Bukhari ) Narrated by Abu Huraira: Allah's Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم said, "The kingdomship will belong to Quraish, the legal authority to the Ansar, the office of making the call to prayer to the Abyssinians, and faithfulness to Azd (Yemen)." (Tirmizi) Abdullah ibn Hawalah Al-Azdi said: "The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم placed his hand over my head and said: "O Ibn Hawalah! When you see that the Khilafah (Caliphate) has settled (has its seat or capital) in the Holy Land (Palestine), then the earthquakes, tribulations and great events will have drawn near. The Hour, on that day, will be closer to the people than my hand is to your head." (Abu Dawud)
Yunus ibn Maysurah Al-Jiblani said: "The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: "This matter will be in Al-Madina, then in AsSham, then in the Al-Jazirah, then in 'Iraq, then in Al-Madina, then in Bayt Al-Maqdis (Jerusalem). And when it comes to Bayt al-Maqdis, then it will be in its homeland. And it will never go away from a people and afterwards return to them." (Nuaim bin Hammad's Kitab Al-Fitan)
Description of the Mahdi & his Lineage
1) He will be from the progeny of the Prophet and descendant of Fatima Umm Salama رضي الله عنها reported: I heard the Prophet of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم saying, "The Mahdi will appear from Itrati (my family or progeny), from the descendants of Fatima." (Abu Dawud, Ibn Maja, Al-Haakim, Al-Albany)
2) More specifically, he is likely to be a descendant of Al-Hasan رضي الله عنه (the older son of Fatima رضي الله عنها & Ali رضي الله عنه). In contrast, the Shia believe Imam Al-Mahdi will be a descendant of Al-Hussein (Al-Hasan's brother). He will resemble the Prophet Mohammad صلى الله عليه وسلم in character.
Abu Iss'haq (Isaac) narrated that Imam Ali رضي الله عنه , once looked at his son Al-Hasan رضي الله عنه and said " This son of mine is a Sayyid (chief or master) as the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم named him (called him or gave him this title). From my reproductive organs (meaning from progeny or descendants) will come a man by the name of your Prophet. He will resemble him (the Prophet) in character, but not in looks (physical appearance).' Then, he (Imam Ali) mentioned that he (the Mahdi) will fill the Earth with justice." (Abu Dawud)
3)
Aisha (r.a.) said that the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: "It worth wondering ! There are people from my Ummah who will head toward House (Mecca's House of Worship) seeking (with evil intention) a man from Quraish (tribe) who has taken refuge in the House. Once they arrive at Bayda, a Khusuf (landslide) will occur to them..." (Sahih Muslim)
4) أخرج ( ك ) أيضا (1115) عن كعب قال: ما المهدي إلا من قريش, وما الخلافة إلا فيهم,[ غير أن له أصلا ونسبا في اليمن[ Ka'b said: " The Mahdi will not (from any tribe) other than from Quraish. The Caliphate is not (from any tribe) other than from Quraish. However, he has an origin (roots) and kinship in Yemen." ( Nuaim bin Hammad's Kitab Al-Fitan, Jalal-uddine AsSuyuti's Al-Urf Al-Wardi fi Akhbar Al-Mahdi, a part of Al-Hawi li Al-Fatawa) 5) His name will be Muhammad and his father's name will be Abdullah. Ibn Masood reported that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said, "Even if there remains only a day before the World ends, the almighty Allah will greatly prolong that day to send a man from me (my progeny), from members of my House (family). His name will be similar to my name and his father's name similar to my father's name." (Abu Dawud) 6) Abu Saeed Al-Khudri reported that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said "The Mahdi is from me (my progeny) and will have a broad, clear (of hair) forehead and a prominent nose and will fill the Earth with fairness and justice as it was filled with oppression and injustice, and will reign for seven years." (Abu Dawud).
7) Once Imam Ali رضي الله عنه was asked to describe the Mahdi's. He replied, "He is a well-built, youthful, with average height and a handsome face. His hair reaches his shoulders, and the light of his face is contrasted by the darkness of his hair and beard." (Muhammad Al-Barzanji's book Isha'ah li Ashrat Al-Sa'a)
The following Hadiths provide more physical description of the Mahdi. However, these Hadiths are weak. They mention that Mahdi's body resembles the bodies of the Israelites. This connection of the Mahdi to the Israelites is likely to be false rumours propagated by the Shia who believe the Mahdi will follow the Jewish Laws and pray in Hebrew: 1) Abu Umamah says that Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: "The people asked: 'O Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم , who will be the Imam of the people at the time? ' He said: 'He will be from my progeny and will be forty years of age. His face will shine like a star and he will have a small black spot on his right cheek. He will don two Qutwaani cloaks as if he is from the Israelites. He will rule for 20 years and will conquer the cities of the Mushrikeen (Polytheists)." (Tabrani)2) The Mahdi will have wheatish complexion, long straight nose, eyes brows round like bow, big black eyes, very white front two teeth and with a spacing between the teeth ,a small black spot on the right cheek, face glowing like a shining star, a mark on his shoulder like that of Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم , complexion like the Arabs and body like the Israelites. He will be slow in speech (with a slight stutter) and when he stutters, he will strike his left thigh with his right hand. He will appear at the age of 40. While praying to Allah, he will expand his hands for prayers like birds expanding their wings. He will be wearing Qutwani Cloaks. He will resemble in character Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم , but in appearance (or looks), he will be different. (Muhammad Al-Barzanji's book Isha'ah li Ashrat Al-Sa'a)
The Mahdi's Place of Birth
Nuaim bin Hammad based on Ali bin Abi Talib (R.A.), the Mahdi will be born in Medina. However, Al-Qurtubi in his book Al-Tazirah said that the Mahdi will be born in the Maghreb (Morocco, Algeria, Tunis region). Others said in Al-Andalus.

The Rise of the Mahdi
Abdullah-bin-Masood has reported that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said,
"The World will not pass away before the Arabs are ruled by a man
(referring to the Mahdi) of my family whose name will be the same as mine."
(Abu Dawud) Umm Salamah رضي الله عنها narrated: The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: "Disagreement will occur upon the death of a Caliph and a man of the people of Medina will flee to Mecca. Some of the people of Mecca will come to him, bring him out against his will and< make him accept their Bay'a (being chosen as a leader) (at a location) between the Rukn (corner of the Ka'ba containing the Black Stone) and the Maqam (Place) of Abraham (located on a side of the Ka'ba). An army from the people of AshSham (Greater Syria) will then be sent against him from but Khusf (land collapse) will happen to them (they will die) in the Baidaa (desert) between Mecca and Medina. When the people see this, the Abdal (pious eminent individuals) of Syria and the Asa'ib (pious individuals) of the people of Iraq will come to him and offer him Bay'a (accept his leadership) between the Rukn and the Maqam. A man from Quraish tribe , whose maternal uncles are from Kalb tribe, will arise and send against them (against the Mahdi & his supporters) an army which they (the Mahdi & his supporters) will overcome. That army will be made up of Kalb tribe. Whoever does not witness the spoils of (this battle with) Kalb tribe will be disappointed (because treasures will be found, according to some narration). He (the Mahdi) will divide (distribute) money (wealth), and will govern the people according to the Sunnah of their Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم and establish Islam on Earth. He will remain seven years, then die, and the Muslims will pray over him." (Abu Dawud) Al-Bazar reported a variation of this Hadith attributed to Anas bin Malik who says that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم mentioned that the army which experience the Khusuf comes from Iraq, not AshSham.
Abu Huraira has narrated that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said, ''A man will emerge from the depth of Damascus. He will be called Sufyani. Most of those who follow him will be from the tribe of Kalb (or Kulaib). He will kill by ripping the stomachs of women and even kill children. Qais tribe will gather against them, but Sufyani & his followers will them. A man from my family will appear in Haram (in Mecca), the news of this event will reach the Sufyani and he will send forth one of his armies. He (the Mahdi) will defeat them. Then, the Sufyani will march (to attack the Mahdi) with whoever remains with him. When they reach a Baidaa (desert), a Khusf (land collapse) will happen to them. None of them (Sufyani's army) will survive, except one person who will tell about what happened.'' (Imam Al-Haakim)
The Sufyani (a descendant of Abu Sufyan) will emerge from Damascus before the Mahdi. According to some weak narration, the Sufyani's name will be Urwa bin Muhammad and his Kuniya (nick name) will be Abu-Utba. The Hadiths regarding the Suffyani specify that he is a tyrant who will spread corruption and mischief on Earth.
Please note that Umm Salama's Hadith mentions
two different armies sent to attack the Mahdi. Whereas Abu Huraira's Hadith
mentions only one army.
الحديث ] )) Huzaifa said that the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said : "When Sudan (either refers to Sudan as a country, or blacks, such as the Abyssinians, meaning Ethiopians) come after the Arabs, they will be defeated and thrown into the lowest part of the Earth (or pushed back to Jordan). While these circumstances exist, the Sufyani will come with three hundred and sixty men until he reaches Damascus. After a month, he will be followed by thirty thousand from Kalb (tribe). He will send an army to Iraq and kill one hundred thousand in Az-Zawra (possibly refers to Baghdad). Then, they (Sufyani's army) will go to Kufa (a city in Iraq) and pillage it. When this occurs, a banner will come from the East led by a man from Tamim called Shuayb, the son of Salih, who will obtain the release of the people of Kufa (captured by Sufyani's army) and (Salih & his men) will defeat them (Sufyani's army). Then, another army of the Sufyani will go to Medina and pillage it for three days and thereafter proceed towards Mecca until these troops find themselves in a desert. Then, Allah will send (Angel) Gabriel and say to him, 'Chastise them!' So, he (Gabriel) will crush them with his leg once and Allah will cause them to be swallowed up (by the earth). None will remain except two men who will return to The Sufyani to inform him of the swallowing-up of his army, but this will not scare him. Several men from Quraish (tribe) will escape to Constantinople (Istanbul or European city). The Sufyani will ask the leader of the Romans to send them back to the Sufyani. The Sufyani will slit their throats and the throats of their followers. At that point, a voice will come from Heaven saying: ' O' people, surely Allah forbids tyrants and their followers for you and (Allah) bestows leadership upon the best of the nation of Muhammad. Join him in Mecca -- he is the Mahdi!' " Then, Huzaifa asked: "O Messenger of Allah, how shall we identify him (the Mahdi)?" He صلى الله عليه وسلم replied: "He is a man from my descendants, he looks like the men of the Israelites, upon him are two white cloaks with frayed edges, 'Qutwani' cloaks. His face is like a glittering star, upon his right cheek there is a black mole and he is forty years old. Al-Abdal (pious individuals) and those seeking the Mahdi like them will come to him (the Mahdi) from Syria. Al-Nujaba (pious individuals) from the dwellers of Egypt will come to him (the Mahdi). Groups of dwellers from the East and those seeking the Mahdi like them will come until they all gather together in Mecca. So, they will pledge their allegiance to him (the Mahdi) between Al-Rukn (corner of the Ka'ba containing the Black Stone) and Al-Maqam (Place) of (Prophet) Abraham عليه السلام (located on a side of the Ka'ba). Then, he (the Mahdi) will lead (an army) towards Syria, with (angel) Gabriel at the fore front and (angel) Michael in the middle. The dwellers of Heaven and Earth will be joyful because of him. Water will be plentiful in his country (Syria) and the River (Euphrates) will spread and treasures will be found ( gold or treasures of religious significance ) . When he (the Mahdi) reaches Syria, he will slay the Sufyani under a tree, the branches of which grow in the direction of Lake Tiberias and he will defeat Kalb (tribe). On that Day (battle) of Kalb, disappointed will be whoever does not get some (of the treasures)." Huzaifa asked: "O Messenger of Allah, صلى الله عليه وسلم , how is it permitted to kill them when they believe in the Oneness (of God)?" The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم replied: "O Huzaifa, they are at that time apostates, they claim that wine is permitted and do not pray." (Nuaim Ibn Hammad's Kitab Al-Fitan, Tabarani, and Abu Amru Uthman bin Saeed Ad-Dani's Kitab Al-Sunan Al-Waredah fi al-Fitan )
The Pillaging of Madina in Saudi Arabia Mu'az ibn Jabal narrated that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said to him: "Omran (the Construction or Reconstruction) of Bayt Al-Maqdis (Jerusalem) will be (lead to) Halak (the pillaging and devastation) of Yathrib (Madina in Saudi Arabia). The pillaging of Yathrib will be (lead to) the outbreak of the Big Battle (with the Romans). The outbreak of the Big Battle will be (lead to) the conquest of Constantinople. The conquest of Constantinople will be (lead to) the coming of Dajjal (Anti-Christ). Then, ... said: This is as true as you (Mu'az ibn Jabal) are here or you are sitting." (Abu Dawud) The Construction or Reconstruction of Jerusalem may signify the time when the Muslims will liberate Jerusalem, make it the seat or capital of the Caliphate and establish what is known in the Bible as New Jerusalem.
Discoveries of Religious Significance Religious relics, such as Ark of the Covenant (containing the Tablets of Stone on which the Ten Commandments were inscribed) are expected to be found by Muslims in Antioch (very important city in Early Christianity, currently located in Turkey, but, historically, was part of Syria), Lake Tiberias (Sea of Galilee in Palestine), or in Rome / Vatican. Rabi'a bin Al-Farisi said: "An army from you go to Rome and conquer it. They will capture the jewlery of Jerusalem, the Ark of the Covenant, Holy Grail, the rod (of Moses), the garment of Adam. A young man will be ordered to handle these things and he will return them to Jerusalem." (Nuaim bin Hammad's Kitab al-Fitan)
Abi Qabil said: "If you conquer Rome, enter its Great Eastern Church from its eastern gate, then count 7 tiles (on the floor) and remove the eighth (tile). Underneath it are the rod of Moses, the (original) Gospel, the relics and jewlery of Jerusalem." (Nuaim bin Hammad's Kitab al-Fitan)
" Afterwards, the army of Mahdi (a.s.) will reach the Golden Church and take possession of the valuable treasures inside it. The Mahdi (a.s.) will take these and distribute them fairly and equitably among Muslims. The Mahdi (a.s.) will lay hands on the Sacred Box inside the Church that contains the iron-tipped stave (rod) of Prophet Jesus عليه السلام and the Rod of Prophet Moses عليه السلام. That Rod of Moses descended to Earth when the Prophet Adam عليه السلام was expelled from Paradise. The Roman emperor seized that Sacred Box from the Dome of the Rock Mosque (in Jerusalem) and took everything of value inside it and hid them in the Golden Church. Eventually, the Mahdi (a.s.) will take them from there once again." ("Death, Doomsday, the Hereafter and the Signs of the End Times", Bedir Publishing, p. 432-448)
This Great Eastern Church and the Golden Church could be:
(a) St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican. It is built over of the Old Saint Peter's Basilica which was built on the orders of Emperor Constantine I. Its construction started in 326-333 period and took 30 years to complete. Constantine I is particularly revered by Eastern Orthodox Christians. He made Constantinople the capital of the Roman empire.
(b) Basilica of St. John Lateran in Rome.It is the official ecclesiastical seat of the Bishop of Rome, who is the Pope. It is also known as ecumenical mother church . It is built on the remains of an older church which because of its splendor used to be known as the Golden Basilica, or
(c) Santa Prassede Basilica is a basilica with glorious Byzantine mosaics in the apse and filling a side chapel. Also here is a piece of the scourging column of Christ, brought from Constantinople in the Middle Ages, relics from the catacombs in the crypt. It is built on the remains of the 5th-century church of Santa Prassede which was one of the tituli, the first parish churches of Rome, and was known as Titulus Praxedis. The current church has two entrances: eastern and southern entrance.
The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم , said, "He is called the Mahdi because he will guide the people to a mountain in AsSham (Greater Syria) from which he will bring out the (original lost) Books of the Torah to refute the Jews. Under the command of the Mahdi, the Ark of the Covenant will be brought forth from the Lake Tiberias and will be placed in Jerusalem." ( Jalal-uddine AsSuyuti's Al-Urf Al-Wardi fi Akhbar Al-Mahdi, a part of Al-Hawi li Al-Fatawa) "The reason he is called the Mahdi (a.s.) is that he guides the way to a hidden thing. He will bring forth the Ark of the Covenant from a place known as Antioch." (Jalal-uddine AsSuyuti's Al-Urf Al-Wardi fi Akhbar Al-Mahdi, a part of Al-Hawi li Al-Fatawa) "He is called the Mahdi (a.s.) because he is the key to something nobody knows. He will bring forth the Ark of the Covenant from the Cave of Antioch." (Nuaim bin Hammad's book Kitab Al-Fitan) and (Ibn Hajar Haithami Al-Makki's book Al-Qawl al-Mukhtasar fi Alamat al-Mahdi al-Muntazar) أخرج ابن ماجة (2779), وأبو نعيم (36) عن أبى هريرة عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال : لم يبق من الدنيا إلا يوم, لطوله الله حتى يملك رجل من أهل بيتي, يفتح القسطنطينية وجبل الديلم, [ ولو لم يبق إلا يوم لطول الله ذلك اليوم حتى يفتحها ]Abu Huraira narrated that the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: "Even if but one single day remains in (the life of) the world, Allah the Great and Mighty will certainly prolong that day in order for one of my family to conquer the Mountain of Dailam (in Iran) and Constantinople." (Ibn Maja, Nuaim bin Hammad's Kiab Al-Fitan, Ibn Hajar Haithami Al-Makkis book Al-Qawl al-Mukhtasar fi Alamat al-Mahdi al-Muntazar)
Tamin Ad-Dari said " I said, 'O Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم , I have never seen a Roman city like the city of Antioch ( in Turkey, but historically, is part of Syria) and I have never seen more rain than it has.' Whereupon the Messenger of Allah, صلى الله عليه وسلم , said: 'Yes, that is because the Torah, Rod of Moses, Tablets (of the Ten Commandments), and the Table of Solomon, the son of David, (made of gold and ornamented with precious jewels, emeralds, pearls and rubies) are in its caves. There is not a single cloud that comes from any direction to it that does not pour its blessing in that valley. And the days and night will not pass until a man from my musked children live in it. His name is like my name and his father's name is like my father's name; his manners are like my manners. He will fill the world with fairness and justice just as it had been filled by harm and transgressions'." (Ibn Hibban's book Ad-Dua'fa and Shaykh Abdullah bin Sadek, Grand Muhaddith of Morocco, 's book Al-Mahdi, Jesus and Dajjal)
Ka'b Al-Ahbar says "He will be called 'Mahdi" because he will guide (yahdi) to something hidden and will bring out the Torah and Gospel from a land called Antioch (in Turkey, but historically part of Syria)." (Izzat and Arif, p. 40; Jalal-uddine AsSuyuti's Al-Urf Al-Wardi fi Akhbar Al-Mahdi, a part of Al-Hawi li Al-Fatawa) أخرج ( ك ) أيضا (1022) عن كعب قال: المهدي يبعث بقتال الروم, يعطي فقه عشرة, يستخرج تابوت السكينة من غار بأنطاكية , [ فيه التوارة التي أنزل الله تعالى على موسى , والإنجيل الذي أنزل الله عز وجل على عيسى , يحكم بين أهل التوراة بتوراتهم , وبين أهل الإنجيل بإنجيلهم ] Ka'b said: "The Mahdi ... excavates Tabout Al-Sakina (Ark of Covenant) from a cave in Antioch (in it, will be the Torah that Allah (t) revealed to Moses and the Gospel that Allah (t) revealed to Jesus..." (Nuaim bin Hammad's Kitab Al-Fitan)
أخرج ( ك ) أيضا (1050) عن سليمان بن عيسى قال: بلغني أنه على يدي المهدي يظهر تابوت السكينة من بحيرة طبرية, حتى يحمل فيوضع بين يديه ببيت المقدس, فإذا نظرت إليه اليهود أسلمت, إلا قليلا منهم [ ثم يموت المهدي ] Sulaiman bin Issa said: "At the hands of the Mahdi, Tabout Al-Sakina (Ark of Covenant) gets excavated from Lake Tiberias (in Palestine) and is carried and placed between his hands (meaning in front of the Mahdi) in Bayt Al-Maqdis (Jerusalem). Once the Jews see it, they will become Muslims, except few of them. Then, the Mahdi will die." (Nuaim bin Hammad's Kitab Al-Fitan)
He is called the Mahdi because he will be guided to a mountain in AshSham (Greater Syria) from which he will bring forth some of Books of the Torah to use them when he argues with the Jews. So, under his hands, a group of the Jews will become Muslim. (Imam Abu Amru Uthman bin Saeed Ad-Dani's Kitab Al-Sunan Al-Waredah fi al-Fitan)
Ahl Al-Kahf (People of the Cave)
The story of these people is mentioned in the Quran in Sura Al-Kahf.
Ibn Marduwayh narrates from Ibn Abbas: "Ahl Al-Kahf (People of the Cave) will be the Mahdi’s helpers (companions)." (Muhammad Al-Barzanji's book Isha'ah li Ashrat Al-Sa'a)
The Shia, particularly, believe that People of the Cave will return and play an important role.

Blessings at the time of the Mahdi
Once again, the Quran and Sunnah will govern the people, this time by the
rightly guided Caliph, the Mahdi. Islam will gain an upper hand and will be
firmly established in the land. The oppression, tyranny, and darkness that
prevailed all over the Globe will be replaced with justice, peace and equity.
Due to the booty gained from the various conquests, everyone will have so much
wealth that an eyebrow will not even be raised at somebody else's wealth.
Callers will shout in the street, ''Is anybody in need of anything?'' Nobody
will respond except one person. Abu Saeed Al-Khudri's Hadith narrated that
Prophet Mohammad صلى الله عليه وسلم said: ''A caller will call 'Who is
in need of wealth?' Only one person will stand (in response to the call and say
I am in need of wealth), he will be told to go to the treasurer and tell him
that the Mahdi orders you to give some wealth. He will be told: 'Gather and
take it.' (He will begin to put it in his lap, when he realized that nobody else
has come and he was the only one) he will regret it and say 'I was the greediest
from among the Ummah (Nation) of Muhammad' . The narrator says, he will return
it, but it will not be accepted, and it will be said to him that we do not
accept what we have given." (Musnad Ahmad) Abu Saeed al-Khudri said I heard that the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم say: " A leader will emerge from your leaders. He will distribute more than can ever be counted. A man will come and ask for goods, and he (the leader) will tell him to take what he wants. That man will spread out his shirt and fill it with goods. The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم spread out a thick shirt he was wearing, showing how that man will be at that time, and then gathered up the corners of that garment and said, this is how that man will collect his goods and carry them away." (Ibn Kathir's book Nihaya fi Fitan & Al-Malahim)
Abu Saeed al-Khudri said: the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: " At the end of Umma, the Mahdi will appear. Allah will give him water as a relief. Land sprouts plants. He give away money. The cattle will increase in number. The Umma (nation) will become magnificent. He will live 7 or 8, meaning Hajj seasons." (Al-Hakim's Al-Mustadrak, Al-Albany classified it as Sahih)
His Reign as a Caliph There are different conflicting narrations regarding the length of the period of the Mahdi's reign as a Caliph.
Umm Salama narrated the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: ''... He will remain seven years, then die, and Muslims will pray for him.'' (Abu Dawud) Abu Saeed Al-Khudri reported that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said "The Mahdi is from me (my progeny) and will have a broad, clear (of hair) forehead and a prominent nose and will fill the Earth with fairness and justice as it was filled with oppression and injustice, and will reign for seven years." (Abu Dawud) Al-Munawi added to this Hadith "or nine years". Abu Saeed Al-Khudri narrated: "We were afraid that things might happen, so we asked the Prophet of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم , ... 'In my Ummah (Nation), there will be the Mahdi; he will appear and remain five, seven or nine.' Zayd was one who was not sure. He said, ' We asked, 'What does that refer to?' He (Prophet Mohammad صلى الله عليه وسلم ) replied, 'Years'." (Tirmizi) Some unconfirmed narrations say that each year of his reign will be equivalent to 20 years. Many Scholars have taken seven years to be the period of his reign due to the fact that the Hadiths which indicate seven years are the most authentic.
There are Hadiths that indicate that when the Mahdi dies, Prophet Jesus will lead his funeral prayer and bury him.
The Shia believe, according to some sayings they attribute to their Imams, that the Mahdi will rule for seven years, but each year will be equivalent to 10 regular years. This means he will rule for what is equivalent to seventy years. However, some Shia believe the Mahdi may rule more than 300 years.
The Mahdi has been prophesied in the Bible The following prophecy in Isaiah 19: 16-25 of the Bible seems to correspond very well with the signs preceding the advent of the Mahdi mentioned above: (a) Verse 17 talks about Israel attacking Egypt. This could be either a reference to Israel's attack on Egypt in 1967 or an attack that will happen in the future. (b) Verse 18 mentions that Egyptians will be speaking language of Canaan which indicates that they will speaking a new language that ancient Egyptian did not speak. Canaan is the region that includes Lebanon and Palestine, where people speak Arabic, and previously Aramaic used to be spoken there which is also a Semitic language, very similar to Arabic. So, we sense that this prophecy is talking about events at the end of time. (c) Verse 19 mentions a sign and a pillar which could be the sign and column of fire or light we discussed above. (d) Verse 20 talks about God sending the Egyptians a saviour from oppression. This saviour could be the Mahdi. (e) Verse 23 says that there will be a highway from Egypt to Assyria. Assyria includes Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, Jordan, Iraq, and Northern Saudi Arabia. This highway could be the proposed bridge Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt to Ras Hamid in Northern Saudi Arabia which as we have indicated above is one of signs, mentioned in Shia books, for the advent of the Mahdi.
Isaiah 19: 16-25 : 16In that day shall Egypt be like unto women: and it shall be afraid and fear because of the shaking of the hand of the LORD of hosts, which he shaketh over it. 17 And the land of Judah (meaning Israel) will bring terror to the Egyptians; everyone to whom Judah is mentioned will be terrified, because of what the LORD Almighty is planning against them. 18In that day shall five cities in the land of Egypt speak the language of Canaan, and swear to the LORD of hosts; one shall be called, The city of destruction (Heliopolis or City of the Sun). 19In that day shall there be an altar to the LORD in the midst of the land of Egypt, and a pillar at the border thereof to the LORD. 20And it shall be for a sign and for a witness unto the LORD Almighty in the land of Egypt: for they shall cry unto the LORD because of the oppressors, and he shall send them a saviour, and a great one, and he shall deliver them. 21And the LORD shall be known to Egypt, and the Egyptians shall know the LORD in that day, and shall do sacrifice and oblation; yea, they shall vow a vow unto the LORD, and perform it. 22And the LORD shall smite Egypt: he shall smite and heal it: and they shall return even to the LORD, and he shall respond to their pleas and heal them. 23In that day shall there be a highway out of Egypt to Assyria, and the Assyrian shall come into Egypt, and the Egyptian into Assyria, and the Egyptians shall serve with the Assyrians. 24In that day shall Israel be the third with Egypt and with Assyria, even a blessing in the midst of the land: 25Whom the LORD of hosts shall bless, saying, Blessed be Egypt my people, and Assyria the work of my hands, and Israel mine inheritance.
Muslims could be ruled by a series of Caliphs, not just the Mahdi Most of the following narrations are all from Kitab al-Fitan by Nuaim ibn Hammad, one of the hafiz imams and the teacher of Imam al-Bukhari. Imam Jalal ad-Din as-Suyuti included them in his book al-'Arf al-Wardi fi Akhbar al-Mahdi [The Rose-Scented Perfume: On the Reports of the Mahdi]. All of them are weak, and none of their chains of narration is traced back to the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم, or even any of the Companions [radhiyallahu 'anhum]; rather they are all from the words of the Tabi'un and their followers. They also apparently contain a number of problematic contradictions regarding their details. Therefore, we list them below for information purposes only. Ibn Munadi said that, “In the book of Prophet Daniel (a.s.), meaning in the Bible, it is reported that, “The Sufyanis are three and the Mahdis are three. When the first Sufyani appears and his name and fame become widespread, the first Mahdi will confront him, the second Mahdi will confront the second Sufyani and the third Mahdi will confront the third Sufyaani and Allah, the Exalted, will send him (the third Mahdi) to save the ones who have suffered mischief, and the believers. The Sunnah will be revived through him and oppression, injustice and cruelty will come to an end through him. The people will be highly prized and become victorious over their opponents at his time. A beautiful life will be lived, and the Earth and the Heavens will increase their blessings..." (Al-Muttaqi Al-Hindi's Al-Burhan fi Alamat Al-Mahdi Akhir Al-Zaman) and (Jalal-uddine AsSuyuti's Al-Urf Al-Wardi fi Akhbar Al-Mahdi, a part of Al-Hawi li Al-Fatawa) أخرج أبو نعيم (40) عن ابن عباس قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم : لن تهلك أمة أنا [ في ] أولها, وعيسى في أخرها, والمهدي في وسطها Ibn Abbas said the the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: : "A nation will not perish in which I am at its beginning, Jesus is at its end, and the Mahdi is in its middle." (Nuaim bin Hammad's Kitab Al-Fitan, Jalal-uddine AsSuyuti's Al-Urf Al-Wardi fi Akhbar Al-Mahdi, a part of Al-Hawi li Al-Fatawa)
Abi Qubayl said: " A man from Bani Hashem (Prophet Mohammad's صلى الله عليه وسلم family clan) will rule. He kills Bani Omaya to that only few of them remain; he does not kill other than them. Then, a man from Bani Omaya will rise up and kills for every man (killed) two men, to the extent that only women will remain. Then, the Mahdi emerges." (Nuaim bin Hammad's Kitab Al-Fitan, Jalal-uddine AsSuyuti's Al-Urf Al-Wardi fi Akhbar Al-Mahdi, a part of Al-Hawi li Al-Fatawa)
أخرج ( ك ) أيضا (966) عن علي قال: (( تكون فتن, ثم تكون جماعة على رأس رجل من أهل بيتي , ليس له عند الله خلاق , فيقتل أو يموت فيقوم المهدي )) Ali bin Abi Talib (r.a.) said: "There will be a Fitna. Then, there will a group headed by a man from my Ahl Bayt, who is unGodly. He kills or dies. Then, the Mahdi rises up." (Nuaim bin Hammad's Kitab Al-Fitan, Jalal-uddine AsSuyuti's Al-Urf Al-Wardi fi Akhbar Al-Mahdi, a part of Al-Hawi li Al-Fatawa)
قال: لا أدري ]Abu Al-Kasim said: " The Hour (of Resurrection) will not occur until a man from my Ahl-Bayt (Household) emerges. He hits (or kills) them until they return to the truth. I asked: 'For how long does he rule?' He said: 'Five and two.' I asked: 'Five and two what? (meaning, years, months, etc.). He said: 'I do not know.' Ali bin Abi Talib (r.a.) said: "Allah will resolve the Fitan (strifes) with a man, ...., who does not give them except the sword. Makes the sword (killing) his duty for 18 months, until they say: 'This is not a descendant of Fatima. If he were one of her descendants, he would have had mercy on us'. Allah will make him be seduced to imitate Bani Al-Abass and Bani Omayya." (Nuaim bin Hammad's Kitab Al-Fitan, Jalal-uddine AsSuyuti's Al-Urf Al-Wardi fi Akhbar Al-Mahdi, a part of Al-Hawi li Al-Fatawa)
Ka'b said: "The Mahdi will die a natural death. Then, the people will be ruled after him by a man from his household who has both good and evil in him, but whose evil is more than his good. He will make the people angry, and call them to division after their unity. He will remain a short while because a man from his household will rise up against him and kill him. After him, the people will fight each other fiercely, and the one who killed him will remain a short while and then die a normal death. Then, they will be ruled by a man from Mudhar, from the East. He will make the people commit kufr, and cause them to go out of their religion. He will fight the people of the Yemen fiercely between the two rivers, but Allah will defeat him and those who are with him." (Nuaim bin Hammad's Kitab Al-Fitan, Jalal-uddine AsSuyuti's Al-Urf Al-Wardi fi Akhbar Al-Mahdi, a part of Al-Hawi li Al-Fatawa)
A man from Banu Makhzum will come to them, be given the bay'ah, and he will remain for some time. Then, he will withhold peoples' livelihoods, and will find no one daring to object. Then, he will withhold their pensions, and will again find no one daring to object. He will settle in Bayt Al-Maqdis (Jerusalem), and he and his companions will be very immoral and disreputable. Their women will walk in sandals decorated with gold and in garments that do not cover them, and no-one will dare object to it. He will order the expulsion of the people of the Yemen: Qudha'ah, Muzh-haj, Hamdan, Humair, Al-Azd, Ghassan, and everyone else who is said to be from the Yemen. He will drive them away until they settle in the woods of Palestine, where groups from Judays, Lakhm, Juzham, and the people from those mountains will bring them food and drink, and provide relief for them, as (Prophet) Yusuf was a means of relief for his brothers. Then, a caller from the sky, neither human nor jinn, will announce: "Give the bay'ah to so and-so, and do not turn back on your heels after emigrating." So they will look, but will not know the man. He will announce it again three times. Then, they will give the bay'ah (allegiance) to Al-Mansur, who will send a delegation of ten men to Al-Makhzumi, who will kill nine of them and leave one. Then he [Al-Mansur] will send five, and he [Al-Makhzumi] will kill four and let one go. Then he will send three, and he will kill two and leave one. Then he (Al-Mansur) will marsh to him (Al-Makhzumi), and Allah will make him victorious over him. Allah will kill him [i.e. the Makhzumi] and those with him, and none will escape except those who flee. He [Al-Mansur] will not leave a single Quraishi without killing him, so that if one were to look for a single Quraishi, he would not find one. As today, one might look for a man from Jurhum and not find any one. Likewise will Quraish be killed to the extent that none of them will exist afterwards." (Nuaim bin Hammad's Kitab Al-Fitan, Jalal-uddine AsSuyuti's Al-Urf Al-Wardi fi Akhbar Al-Mahdi, a part of Al-Hawi li Al-Fatawa)
Then after him will be Caliphs from his Household. They will rule for a long time and they will become oppressive, until the people praise Banu Al-Abbas and Banu Umayyah because of their suffering (under the current rulers)." Jarrah said: "Their time will last for two hundred years." (Nuaim bin Hammad's Kitab Al-Fitan, Jalal-uddine AsSuyuti's Al-Urf Al-Wardi fi Akhbar Al-Mahdi, a part of Al-Hawi li Al-Fatawa)
Abi Qubayl said: "And the people will remain at ease as long as the kingship of Banu Al-Abbas has not been undone, but when their kingship is undone, they (the people) will remain in Fitan until the rising of the Mahdi. After the Mahdi, no one from his household will deal justly with the people. Their tyranny (of the rulers from the Household of the Mahdi) will continue for a long time after the Mahdi, until the people praise Banu Al-Abbas, saying: "It would have been better if they were still ruling." So, the people will continue like that, until they invade Constantinople with their ruler, who will be a righteous man. He will hand them (the rule) over to Jesus son of Mary عليه السلام ." (Nuaim bin Hammad's Kitab Al-Fitan, Jalal-uddine AsSuyuti's Al-Urf Al-Wardi fi Akhbar Al-Mahdi, a part of Al-Hawi li Al-Fatawa)
Arta said: "There will be a peace-treaty between the Mahdi and the Romans. Then, the Mahdi will die, then a man from his household will succeed him, who will rule justly for a little while, then he will draw his sword against the people of Palestine, who will rise up against him. So, he will seek help from the people of Jordan, remaining among them for two months. Then, he will draw his sword against them, and they will rise up against him. So, he will leave, fleeing, until he settles in Damascus. Have you seen the door-posts at the gate of Al-Jabiyah at the place of the money-changers, there is a circular stone at five cubits from it ? There, he will be slaughtered, and the mention of his blood will not cease until it is said: "The Romans have sent their army, and have landed between Soor (city in southern Lebanon also called Tyre) and 'Akka (city in northern Palestine)!" This will be (the beginning of) the Malahim [the big battles]." (Nuaim bin Hammad's Kitab Al-Fitan, Jalal-uddine AsSuyuti's Al-Urf Al-Wardi fi Akhbar Al-Mahdi, a part of Al-Hawi li Al-Fatawa)
Abdullah ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, said to Mujahid: "If I have not heard that you are like the people of this House (of Prophet Mohammad صلى الله عليه وسلم ), I would never tell you this." Whereupon Mujahid said: "This surely will be kept a secret, I will not mention it to someone you hate." So Abdullah ibn Abbas told him: "There are four people from the House (of Prophet Mohammad صلى الله عليه وسلم ), from us is Al-Saffah, and from us is Al-Munzir, and from us is Al-Mansur, and from us is Al-Mahdi." So Mujahid said: "Clarify these four for me." He answered: "As for Al-Saffah (means the Butcher or Killer), he may kill his supporters and forgive his enemy. Al-Munzir (the Warner) will give away plenty of wealth, he will be humble and keep but a little of his rights. Al-Mansur (the Victorious), will be given victory over his enemy and (be given by Allah) part of what was given to the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم and that is his (the Prophet's) enemies were frightened away from him the traveling distance of two months, whereas the enemy of the Mansur will be frightened away from him the traveling distance of one month. Al-Mahdi (the Guided) will fill the Earth with justice just as it has been filled with transgression -- livestock and foxes will live together peacefully. And the Earth will bring forth that which is hidden from its depths -- they look like cylinders of gold or silver."

Al-Walid said that he heard a man speaking to people saying: " The Mahdis are three: The Mahdi of Khair (Prosperity & Wealth) is Omar bin Abd Al-Aziz, Mahdi of Blood with whom blood will be soothed (cool down), and the Mahdi of Religion who is Jesus son of Mary, his nation will become Muslim during his time." Then, there will one another one after him, but less than him. He will be good (righteous) and remains 14 years. Then, there will one another one after him, but less than him. This remains until the Mahdi rises up." (Nuaim bin Hammad's Kitab Al-Fitan, Jalal-uddine AsSuyuti's Al-Urf Al-Wardi fi Akhbar Al-Mahdi, a part of Al-Hawi li Al-Fatawa)

Aban bin Al-Walid Al-Mu'ti heard Ibn Abbas talking with Muawiya and asked him about the End of Time, so he told him: " A man from them (meaning from Banu Hashem) at the End of Time will rule for 40 years. The Battles (with Romans) will be in the last remaining 7 years of his reign. He dies in the Amaaq (where the Big Battle with the Romans occurs), then a man with two small marks (on his face) will succeed him . He is the one who will conquer (Constantinople)." Ka'b said: "The Mansur (Victorious) is a Mahdi ... will be successful in fighting the Romans and in the battles for 20 years. Then, he dies as a martyr in the Big Battle, along with two thousand, all of them are princes and commanders of battalions. The Muslims have never been afflicted with a greater calamity after the death of the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم ." (Nuaim bin Hammad's Kitab Al-Fitan)
The Rule of the Qahtani ( also known as Prince of Osab) One of the most often named Caliph or Prince, most likely coming after Al-Mahdi is called Al-Qahtani (meaning from Qahtan tribe) and it seems that he is the same ruler referred to as Prince of Osab ( العُصَب ) . Abu Huraira [r.a.] said the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: "The Hour will not come until a man comes from Qahtan, driving the people with his staff." (Bukhari)

Qays ibn Jabir as-Sadafi that the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: "After me, there will be Caliphs. After the Caliphs, there will be Amirs (Princes). After the Amirs (Princes), there will be Kings. Afterwards, there will be Tyrant Kings. Then, a man from my household emerges who will fill the Earth with justice as it was filled with tyranny. Then, after him, the Qahtani will be made an Amir (Prince), and by Him Who sent me with the Truth, he (Qahtani) is not lesser than him (Mahdi)." (Tabarani, Ibn Asakir, Ibn Mandah, Nuaim bin Hammad's Kitab Al-Fitan)
Arta said: "It has reached me that the Mahdi will live for forty years, then he will die on his bed. Then, a man from Qahtan will come, with pierced ears, who will follow the example of the Mahdi. He will remain for twenty years and then he will die, killed by a weapon. Ka'b said: "He [Makhzumi] will fight the people of the Yemen very fiercely between the two rivers, but Allah will defeat him and those with him. The people of the East and those with him [followers of the Makhzumi]will be terrified at the sight of all of the dead bodies in the river, and they will realize that they have been defeated. So, their [i.e. the people of the Yemen's] cavalry will head to Yemen, while they are camped between the two rivers, and Allah [ta'ala] will give victory to him and those with him. So the people's affairs will be righted, and they will enjoy a happy unity. Then, they will go until they settle in AsSham, where they will remain for a long time under a righteous rule. Then, Qays will rise up against them, so the people of the Yemen will kill them until one would think that (almost) no one from Qays is left alive. Then, a man from the people of the Yemen will stand up and say: "Fear Allah regarding your brothers!" Then the remnants of Qays will go until they settle between the two rivers, where they will assemble a great army, and appoint as their ruler a man from Banu Makhzum. Then, the ruler of the Yemen will die, and Qays will rejoice at his death. The Makhzumi will marsh, until when the last of them has crossed the Euphrates, the Makhzumi will die. So the Yemen will revert to its borders, and Qays to its borders. The Mawali will be angry about that, and on that day, they will be the majority of people at that time. So they will say: "Let us appoint as our ruler a man from those knowledgeable in religious matters." So, they will send a group from the people of the Yemen, a group from Mudhar, and a group from the Mawali to Bayt al-Maqdis (Jerusalem), where they will recite the Book of Allah [ta'ala] and ask Him to guide them to the correct choice. So that group will return, having appointed as their ruler a man from the Mawali, and woe to the people of AsSham and its land from his rule! So he will marsh to Mudhar, intending to fight them. Then, he will send a man from the people of the West, heavy-built with broad shoulders, who will kill whoever he meets in battle, until he enters Bayt Al-Maqdis (Jerusalem). Then, he will be injured by an animal and die. At that time, the World will be in the worst state that it has ever been. Then a man will rule after him from the people of Mudhar, who will kill the righteous people. He is cursed and ominous. Then, al-Mudhari al-'Umani Al-Qahtani will follow the example of his brother the Mahdi, and at his hands, the City of the Romans will be conquered." Then, there will be Al-Mansur. Then, there will be mahdi. Then, there will be Al-Ameen (Trustworthy). Then, there will be Seen and Peace. Then, there will be Amir (Prince) of Osab ( العُصَب ). Six of them will be from the descendants of Ka'ab bin Luay, and one man from Qahtan. Each of them (these princes) will be good and will not be seen like him." (Nuaim bin Hammad's Kitab Al-Fitan, Jalal-uddine AsSuyuti's Al-Urf Al-Wardi fi Akhbar Al-Mahdi, a part of Al-Hawi li Al-Fatawa)
Abdullah bin Amr bin Al-Aas said: "After the tyrants, there will be Al-Jaber, who will be brought by Allah to ease the suffering of Ummah of Mohammad, then, Al-Mahdi, then Al-Mansur, then Al-Salam, then Prince of Osab ( العُصَب ). Whoever can die after that, let me die." (Nuaim bin Hammad's Kitab Al-Fitan, Jalal-uddine AsSuyuti's Al-Urf Al-Wardi fi Akhbar Al-Mahdi, a part of Al-Hawi li Al-Fatawa)
Abdullah bin Amr bin Al-Aas said: " Three princes will succeed each other. All of two lands will be conquered by them. All of them are righteous: Al-Jaber, then Al-Mufrej, then Zhu Osab ( العُصَب ). They will remain 40 years. Then, there will be no good after them."
Then, after him Sharif azZikr, from the people of Tubba' (ancient kingdom in Yemen), called Mansur, will be in Bayt al-Maqdis for twenty one years. Fifteen years will be of justice, followed by three years of tyranny, followed by three years of withholding wealth in which he will not give anyone a single dirham. He will distribute the people of the Zhimma among his fighters. It is he who will keep the Mawali away, deep in Al-Amaq (the valleys), and it is he who will trample the descendants of Isma'il (Ishmael) like the cattle trample the twigs. It is he against whom a Mawla will rise up, whose name is the name of a Prophet, and whose Kunya is the Kunya of a Prophet. He (the Mawla) will march to him (Mansur) from al-A'maq until he meets him inside Ariha (Jericho in Palestine), where he will fight him and kill him. Then, the Mawla will rule, and he will banish the descendants of Qahtan (probably Mansur was ftom Qahtan tribe) and the descendants of Isma'il (Ishmael) to the two cities of the treasures of the Arabs, Al-Madina (in Saudi Arabia) and San'a' (in Yemen). It is he who is responsible for letting the Turks and the Romans invade until they control the whole area from the valley of Antioch (in Turkey) up to Mount Carmel in Palestine at the pasture (field) of the city of 'Akka (in Palestine). The Mawla will rule for three years, then he will be killed. Then after him, the second Mahdi will come to power, and it is he who will fight the Romans and defeat them. He conquers Constantinople and stays in it for three years, four months and ten days. Then, Jesus son of Mary عليه السلام will descend, and he (Second Mahdi) will hand over the rule to him (Jesus)." (Nuaim bin Hammad's Kitab Al-Fitan, Jalal-uddine AsSuyuti's Al-Urf Al-Wardi fi Akhbar Al-Mahdi, a part of Al-Hawi li Al-Fatawa)
Some athar narrated by Nuaim ibn Hammad in Kitab al-Fitan also indicate that the Qahtani will be killed as a martyr during the Malhama along with seventy of his amirs, and Allah knows better.
The Rule of Al-Jahjah
Abu Huraira [r.a.] said: "The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: "Day and night will not come to an end until a man from the mawali called Jahjah (or Jahjaah) rules." (Ahmad, Muslim) Muslim comments that there are four brothers who are to as Jahjah: Sharik, Obaid-Allah, Omair, and Abd-Al-Kabir from Banu Abd-Al-Majid. The authentic ahadith do not give any further details of Al-Jahjah or what will occur during his rule; however, the fact that he is from the mawali may have some relevance regarding the rule of the Mawali that will follow the rule of the people of the Yemen. It is also possible that the Jahjah may rule after Jesus dies. The Mawali [singular "mawla"] are the Muslims of non-Arab descent in general, whether they are freed slaves or not. They are called the Mawali because traditionally, the non-Arab Muslims upon entering Islam would give their allegiance [wala'] to one of the Arab tribes.
